Ilex maguirei Wurdack

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Shrub, evergreen, 0.5–2 m tall. Current year's branchlets pubescent (poils courts) or hirsute. Branchlets older than one year rough, greyish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0.1–0.7 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.5 mm. Petiole pubescent, rough or grooved surface, 2–4 mm. Lamina ovate to elliptic, orbiculate (1:1) or oblong (1:2), 1.5–3.5 X, 1–2.5 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially or pubescent abaxially. Base rounded or truncate or cordate. Apex rounded, mucronate. Apex emarginate or rounded or acuminate (très brièvement). Acumen 0.1 cm. Margin revolute, entire. Midbrid adaxially impressed or flat, pubescent on proximal half. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous or pubescent on proximal half or pubescent. Secondary veins abaxially obscure, 4–6 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly present (parfois peu visible).

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary or terminal. Thyrses axes 0.5–4 cm. Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 3–5 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 4–6 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 1.5–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Bracts linear-triangular, 0.5–1 mm, margin ciliate or dentate. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangular, pubescent, 0.3–0.4 mm, margin ciliate. Male flowers 4 -merous (-5?), white. Calyx pubescent, 2–3 mm in diam., margin ciliate or dentate. Corolla 2–3 mm, petals connate on, petals 20–30 % of their length. Apex margin ciliate. Stamens at the anthesis shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary pyramidal, pubescent.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary or terminal. Thyrses axes 0.5–4 cm. Cymes of order 1. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 3–7(–11) mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 4–6 tenth of the base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangulate, pubescent, 0.5 mm, margin ciliate. Female flowers 4–5(–6) -merous, white. Calyx pubescent, margin ciliate or dentate, 2–3 mm in diam. Corolla 2.5–3 mm, petals connate on, petals 20–30 % of their length. Apex margin ciliate. Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary ovoid (relativement caractéristiquement allongé), pubescent, stigma capitate or columnar, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit red (-brun), ovoid, 5–6 mm in diam., 6–7 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Venezuela (Amazonas: Cerro de la Neblina, Serrania Yutajé), 1500–1800 m, Herbazal inundable en planicie aluvial, bosquetes de palmas al pie de las vertientes, arbustales densos sobre l vertientes rocosas.

Flowering.— January or December.
