Ilex microphylla Hook.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Shrub, evergreen, 1 m tall. Current year's branchlets pubescent. Branchlets older than one year rough, greyish or brownish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0–0.5 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.3–0.5 mm. Petiole glabrous or pubescent, smooth surface or rough or grooved surface, 1–3 mm. Lamina ovate to elliptic, orbiculate (1:1) to oblong (1:2), (0.4–)0.7–2.3 X, 0.3–0.5(–0.7) cm, papyraceous or coriaceous, glabrous abaxially or pubescent abaxially. Base cuneate to rounded. Apex obtuse to acute, mucronate. Apex rounded. Margin plane or revolute, crenate or dentate, teeth conspicuous. Teeth 2–5 ca., over the entire length of the margin or on the distal half of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed or flat, pubescent on proximal half or pubescent. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous or pubescent. Secondary veins abaxially obscure, 3–6 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly present.

Inflorescences.— Solitary dichasium.

Male flowers.— Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles glabrous or pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 3–4 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 2–4 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 0.5–2 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoid or linear-triangular, glabrous or pubescent, 0.3–1 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4 -merous, white (pétales rougeâtres extérieurement selon _$Prieto 310_£). Calyx glabrous or pubescent, 1.5–3 mm in diam., margin ciliate or dentate. Corolla 2–3 mm, petals free or connate on, petals 10–25 % of their length (soudure par les étamines). Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary pyramidal, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Cymes of order 1. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 3–4 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 3–6 tenth of the base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangulate, pubescent, 0.5–0.8 mm, margin ciliate. Female flowers 4 -merous. Calyx pubescent, margin ciliate or dentate (poilue), 2–3 mm in diam. Corolla 2.5 mm, petals connate on, petals 30–40 % of their length. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary ovoid or spherical, glabrous, stigma capitate or columnar, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit black, spherical, 4–5 mm in diam., 4–5 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Ecuador Peru, 3000–3700 m, "Bosque" andin de pérennes et décidues: forêt basse sempervirente.

Flowering.— September.
