Ilex mucronulata Cuatrec.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree (grand), evergreen, 6–20 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed or rough, greyish or reddish (noirâtre), glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present or absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0.3–2 cm. Stipules caducous, deltoid or linear-triangular, 0.5–1.2 mm. Petiole glabrous or pubescent, rough or grooved surface, 4–10 mm. Lamina elliptic to obovate (rarement très légèrement ovale), oblong (1:2), 5–12 X, 2.5–6 cm, membranous or papyraceous (jeunes feuilles), glabrous abaxially or pubescent abaxially (petits poils sur les nervures). Base cuneate to rounded. Apex rounded to acute, mucronate. Apex acuminate. Acumen 0.3–1.3 cm. Margin plane or revolute (légèrement à la base), entire or dentate, teeth inconspicuous. Teeth 0–9 ca., on the distal half of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed, pubescent on proximal half or pubescent. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous (à part quelques rares poils courts). Secondary veins abaxially evident (finement pubescentes, invisibles à l'oeil nu), 6–11 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly absent.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.7–1.6 cm. Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles glabrous or pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 4–15 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 1–5 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 2 3.8–7.5 mm. Bracts deltoids or linear-triangulate, glabrous or pubescent, 0.8–1.8 mm, margin entire or margin ciliate or dentate. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoids, glabrous or pubescent, 0.3–0.5 mm, margin entire or margin ciliate. Female flowers 4 -merous. Calyx glabrous, margin entire, 2–3 mm in diam. Ovary spherical, glabrous, stigma mamillate or capitate.

Fruits.— Fruit red (foncé), ovoid or spherical, 2.5–8 mm in diam. (10 à l'état frais), 4.5–10 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Colombia Ecuador, 0–1100 m, Forêt humide prémontagnarde.
