Ilex myricoides-Colombie Kunth

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree or shrub, evergreen, 2–12 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous (parfois quelques poils courts). Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, greyish or brownish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present. Internodes 0.1–1.5 cm. Stipules persistent, linear-triangular, 0.4–0.8 mm. Petiole glabrous, rough or grooved surface, 2–6 mm. Lamina elliptic to obovate, oblong (1:2), 1.5–4.5 X, 0.6–2 cm, papyraceous to coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base acute to obtuse. Apex obtuse to acute, mucronate. Apex rounded or acuminate (rarement). Acumen 0.5–0.8 cm. Margin revolute, crenate to dentate, teeth conspicuous. Teeth 8–14 ca., over the entire length of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed, pubescent on proximal half. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 4–8 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly present.

Inflorescences.— Solitary dichasium.

Male flowers.— Cymes of order 1- 2. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 7–9 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 6–8 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 1–2 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangular, glabrous, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4 -merous. Calyx glabrous, 2–3 mm in diam., margin entire or margin ciliate or dentate. Corolla 2–3 mm, petals connate on, petals 20–30 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary pyramidal, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles glabrous or pubescent (rarement). Peduncles of order 1 5–14 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 6–8 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 2 2–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 1–5 tenth of the base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangulate, glabrous, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous, margin ciliate or dentate, 2–3 mm in diam. Corolla 2–3 mm, petals connate on, petals 20–30 % of their length. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary ovoid, glabrous, stigma capitate or columnar (parfois désaxé), stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit black or green (immature), flattened, 8–9 mm in diam., 6–7 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Colombia, 2800–3300 m, Paramo.

Flowering.— September.
