Ilex neblinensis Edwin

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree or shrub, evergreen, 1–8 m tall. 10 cm dbh. Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, reddish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0–1.5 cm. Stipules caducous, deltoid, 0.5 mm. Petiole glabrous, rough or grooved surface, 5–10 mm. Lamina elliptic, orbiculate (1:1) to oblong (1:2), (2.5–)3–5.5(–8.5) X, 1.5–3(–4.5) cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base obtuse to rounded. Apex rounded, mucronate. Apex retuse to rounded. Margin revolute, entire. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous (poils minuscules tout au fond). Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially obscure, 4–5 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly present.

Inflorescences.— Solitary dichasium.

Female flowers.— Cymes of order 1. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 7–15(–17) mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 2–4 tenth of the base. Bracts deltoids, glabrous, 1 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoids, glabrous, 0.1 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4–5 -merous. Calyx glabrous, margin entire, 3 mm in diam. Corolla 3.5 mm, petals connate on, petals 10 % of their length. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary spherical, glabrous, stigma capitate, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit of another color than red, black or green (brun), ovoid, 5–10 mm in diam., 7–9 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Venezuela (Amazonas, Cerro de la Neblina), 1700–2100 m, Forêt ouverte de pente raide le long d'escarpement de grès.

Flowering.— November to December.
