Ilex nitida (Vahl) Maxim.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree, 8–20 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, greyish or reddish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present. Internodes 0.5–2 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.7–1 mm. Petiole glabrous, rough or grooved surface, 5–15 mm. Lamina elliptic or obovate, oblong (1:2), 4–9 X, 2.5–6 cm, papyraceous. Base obtuse or rounded. Apex rounded or obtuse, not mucronate. Apex rounded or acuminate. Acumen 0.2–0.3 cm. Margin revolute, crenate (irrégulière), teeth inconspicuous or conspicuous. Teeth 7–10 ca., over the entire length of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed or flat, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 6–8 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly absent.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, non proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes 0.3 cm. Cymes of order 1–3. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 5–8 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 7–8 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 2–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth from the base or 5 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 3 -1 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Bracts linear-triangular, glabrous, -1 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangular, glabrous, -0.5 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4 -merous. Calyx glabrous, 2–3 mm in diam., margin entire. Corolla 3–4 mm, petals connate on, petals 20 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary pyramidal or subglobulous or flattened, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.1–0.2 cm. Cymes of order 1. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 4–7 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 3–4 tenth of the base. Bracts deltoids, glabrous, 0.5–0.7 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangulate, glabrous, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4 -merous. Calyx glabrous, margin entire, 2–2.5 mm in diam. Corolla 2.5–3 mm, petals connate on, petals 20 % of their length. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary ovoid, glabrous, stigma mamillate, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit red, spherical, 6–7 mm in diam., 6–7 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— The Antilles, Puerto Rico or Leeward Islands (Montserrat).

Flowering.— February or March or April.
