Ilex ovalifolia G. Mey.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, brownish or reddish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0.5–2 cm. Stipules caducous, 0.2–0.3 mm. Petiole glabrous, rough or grooved surface, 4–8 mm. Lamina elliptic or obovate, oblong (1:2), 5–12 X, 3.5–6.5 cm, papyraceous. Base obtuse or rounded. Apex rounded or obtuse, not mucronate. Apex rounded or acuminate. Acumen 0.2–0.5 cm. Margin revolute, crenate or dentate, teeth conspicuous. Teeth 15–25 ca., over the entire length of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 7–9 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly present.

Inflorescences.— Thyrsoid, heterocladic, with subthyrsoids alternate.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 1.5–4 cm. Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles glabrous or pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 2–4 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 4–6 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 0.7–1 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Bracts linear-triangular, pubescent, 0.8–1 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoid, pubescent, 0.5–0.7 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4 -merous. Calyx pubescent, 2–2.5 mm in diam., margin ciliate or dentate. Corolla 2–2.5 mm, petals connate on, petals 20–30 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis equal to corolla. Rudimentary ovary pyramidal, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.6–2.5 cm. Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 1.5–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 2–5 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 2 1–1.5 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–2 tenth of the base. Bracts linear-triangulate, pubescent, 0.5–1 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangulate, pubescent, 0.3–0.5 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4 -merous. Calyx glabrous (parfois quelques poils), margin ciliate or dentate, 1.5–2 mm in diam. Corolla 1.5–2 mm, petals connate on, petals 20–30 % of their length. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary spherical, glabrous, stigma capitate, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit spherical or flattened, 3–4 mm in diam., 2.5–3 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, British Guyana Surinam French Guyana.
