Ilex ovalis (Ruiz & Pav.) Loes.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Shrub, evergreen, 1–3 m tall. Current year's branchlets pubescent or hirsute. Branchlets older than one year rough, brownish or reddish, pubescent, dense short trichomes. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present. Internodes 0.2–4 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.2–1.5 mm. Petiole pubescent, rough or grooved surface, 1–5 mm. Lamina elliptic to obovate, orbiculate (1:1) to oblong (1:2), 0.8–3 X, 0.6–2 cm, papyraceous or coriaceous, glabrous abaxially (à part quelques poils courts sur les jeunes feuilles). Base acute to rounded. Apex rounded to obtuse, mucronate. Apex rounded. Margin plane (à bordure épaissie, légèrement révolutée à la base du limbe), crenate to dentate, teeth inconspicuous or conspicuous. Teeth (4–)8–15(–17) ca., over the entire length of the margin or on the distal half of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous or pubescent. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous or pubescent. Secondary veins abaxially evident or obscure, 3–5 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly present.

Inflorescences.— Solitary dichasium.

Male flowers.— Cymes of order 1–3. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 (2.5–)4–10(–13) mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 4–8 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 0–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 1–6 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 3 1 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 1–6 tenth from the base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite or subopposite, deltoid or linear-triangular, glabrous or pubescent, 0.5–1 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4 -merous. Calyx pubescent (poils peu nombreux), 1–3 mm in diam., margin ciliate or dentate. Corolla 1–2.5 mm, petals connate on, petals 10–20 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary pyramidal or subglobulous or flattened (immature), glabrous.

Female flowers.— Cymes of order 1. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 4–6 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 7–9 tenth of the base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoids, pubescent, 0.5 mm, margin entire (quoique fortement poilue). Female flowers 4 -merous. Calyx pubescent, margin ciliate or dentate, 2.5–3.5 mm in diam. Corolla 2.5 mm, petals connate on, petals 40 % of their length. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary ovoid, glabrous, stigma capitate, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit red to black, spherical, 4–5 mm in diam., 4–5 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Colombia Peru, 2100–3000 m, "Bosque" andin de pérennes et décidues: crête de montagne couverte par une végétation arbustive de type "Pajonal".

Flowering.— August or December.
