Ilex pallida Standl.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree or shrub, evergreen, 1.5–10 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous or pubescent (poils très courts et espacés). Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, brownish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present. Internodes 0.2–2 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.2–0.5 mm. Petiole glabrous, rough or grooved surface, 2–5 mm. Lamina elliptic, oblong (1:2), 4–6 X, 1.8–3 cm, papyraceous, glabrous abaxially. Base acute or obtuse. Apex obtuse or acute, not mucronate. Apex acuminate. Acumen 0.3–0.5 cm. Margin revolute (finement), dentate, teeth inconspicuous. Teeth 5–15 ca., over the entire length of the margin or on the distal half of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 4–7 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly absent.

Inflorescences.— Solitary dichasium.

Male flowers.— Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles pubescent (poils très courts). Peduncles of order 1 10–18 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 7–8 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 3–5 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangular, glabrous, 0.5–1 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4 -merous, white. Calyx pubescent (poils courts et espacés), 2–2.5 mm in diam., margin ciliate or dentate. Corolla 2.5–3 mm, petals connate on, petals 10–20 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary pyramidal, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Cymes of order 1. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 8–10 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 7–8 tenth of the base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangulate, glabrous, 0.5–0.8 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous, margin entire, 2–3 mm in diam.

Fruits.— Fruit red (foncé), spherical, 5–8 mm in diam., 5–8 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— Central America, Nicaragua or Costa Rica or Panama, 1100–1400 m, localement commun,forêt des nuages.

Flowering.— February or March or April.
