Ilex petiolaris Benth.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree, evergreen, 7–25 m tall. 28–35 cm dbh (pour un arbre de 25 m). Current year's branchlets glabrous or pubescent (à fort grossissement). Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, brownish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present. Internodes 0.5–2.5 cm. Stipules caducous, deltoid, 0.2–0.7 mm. Petiole glabrous or pubescent (poils très courts visibles à fort grossissement), rough or grooved surface, 8–19 mm. Lamina elliptic to obovate, oblong (1:2), 4.5–10.5 X, 2.5–4.5 cm, papyraceous to coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base cuneate to obtuse. Apex obtuse to acute, not mucronate. Apex acuminate. Acumen 0.2–0.5 cm. Margin plane or revolute, entire. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous or pubescent (poils très courts). Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous or pubescent (quelques rares poils très courts). Secondary veins abaxially evident, 5–10 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly present (minuscule, peu visible).

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary or issued from several axillary buds. Thyrses axes 0.1–4 cm. Cymes of order 2–4. Peduncles glabrous or pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 4–15 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 6–9 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 1–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 1–4 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 3 1–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 4 2–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 4 at 0–1 tenth from base. Bracts deltoids, glabrous or pubescent, 0.5–1.2 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 subopposite (la séparation entre les pédoncules d'ordre 1 et 2 se fait plus bas que le point d'insertion des préfeuilles de l'ordre 1), deltoid, glabrous or pubescent, 0.3–0.5 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous or pubescent, 1.5–2 mm in diam., margin entire or margin ciliate or dentate (avec des poils). Corolla 2 mm, petals free (un pétale est soudé à une étamine). Apex margin entire (papilleuse). Stamens at the anthesis longer than corolla or equal to corolla. Rudimentary ovary pyramidal or subglobulous or flattened, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.1–0.3 cm. Cymes of order 1. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 4–5 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 6–10 tenth of the base. Bracts deltoids, pubescent, 0.5–1 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 subopposite, deltoids, pubescent, 0.3–0.5 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4 -merous, white. Calyx pubescent (quelques poils plus ou moins développés), margin ciliate or dentate (par quelques poils), 2 mm in diam. (en fruit). Ovary glabrous, stigma capitate, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit red, spherical, 4–5 mm in diam., 3.5–4 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Colombia Peru Brazil, 90–120(–800) m, Forêt dense humide sempervirente: sur sol de sable blanc (selon V squez 9636).

Flowering.— January or September to December.
