Ilex polita Steyerm.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree or shrub, evergreen, 1.5–4 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, greyish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0.5–3 cm. Stipules caducous, deltoid, 0.5 mm. Petiole glabrous, rough or grooved surface (base du pétiole comme un col roulé, un bourrelet qui s'étale sur la branche), 4–10 mm. Lamina elliptic (voire légèrement obovale), oblong (1:2), 4–7.5(–11) X, 1.8–4.5(–8) cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base acute or obtuse or rounded. Apex rounded or obtuse, mucronate. Apex retuse or rounded or acuminate. Acumen 0.1–0.2 cm. Margin revolute, entire. Midbrid adaxially impressed or flat, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident or obscure, 5–9 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly absent.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 1–3 cm. Cymes of order 2–3. Peduncles glabrous or pubescent (poils très courts). Peduncles of order 1 5–6 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 6–7 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 1.5–2 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 2–5 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 3 1 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoid, glabrous, 0.5–0.7 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4–5 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous or pubescent, 1.5–2 mm in diam., margin ciliate or dentate. Corolla 1–1.5 mm, petals connate on, petals 10–30 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis equal to corolla. Rudimentary ovary subglobulous or flattened or subpear-shaped, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary (parfois doubles?). Thyrses axes 0.5–10 cm. Cymes of order 1. Peduncles glabrous or pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 3–6 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 3–4 tenth of the base. Bracts linear-triangulate, glabrous or pubescent, 0.5 mm, margin entire or margin ciliate or dentate. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangulate, pubescent, 0.5 mm, margin ciliate. Female flowers 4 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous (quelques rares poils), margin ciliate or dentate, 3–4 mm in diam. Corolla 2–3 mm, petals connate on, petals 20–30 % of their length. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary spherical, glabrous, stigma mamillate or capitate, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit green, spherical, 5–6 mm in diam., 5–6 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Venezuela (Bolívar: Bassin du Río Caroní, incluant Amaray-tepui, Ayuántepui, Río Icabarú, and Río Paragua, Cerro Guaiquinima), 300–1200(–2200) m, Forêts semi-décidues à sempervirentes, savanes arbustives, forêts basses au sommet des tepuis et des escarpements. Savannes à Stegolepis avec des patchs arborescents.

Flowering.— February or March.
