Ilex ptariana in litt. Steyerm.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree or shrub, evergreen, 6–13 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year glabrous. Petiole glabrous, 6–10 mm. Lamina elliptic to obovate, oblong (1:2), 4–9 X, 2–5 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base acute to rounded. Apex rounded to obtuse, mucronate. Apex emarginate or rounded. Margin revolute, entire. Midbrid adaxially impressed. Midbrid abaxially raised. Secondary veins 7–8 pairs. Ponctuation abaxiallly absent.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles of order 1 16–22 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 7–8 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 4–6 mm. Bracts 1.5 mm, margin ciliate or dentate. Male flowers 6–7 -merous. Calyx glabrous, 3–4 mm in diam., margin ciliate or dentate. Corolla 3.3 mm, petals connate on, petals 10 % of their length. Stamens at the anthesis shorter than corolla.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Cymes of order 1. Peduncles of order 1 10–20 mm. Calyx glabrous, margin ciliate or dentate, 3–4 mm in diam.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Venezuela (Bolívar: Serra do Sol along Venezuelan border), 2100–2400 m, forêt de pentes escarpées sur le tepui.

Flowering.— October.
