Ilex quitensis f. glabra Loes.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Shrub, evergreen, 2 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year rough, reddish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0.1–0.4 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.3 mm. Petiole glabrous, smooth surface, 4–6 mm. Lamina elliptic to obovate, orbiculate (1:1) to oblong (1:2), 1.5–3 X, 1–1.7 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base cuneate to acute. Apex rounded to obtuse, mucronate. Apex retuse or rounded. Margin revolute, entire. Midbrid adaxially impressed or flat, pubescent on proximal half. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 5–6 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly present or absent.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, non proliferating.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0–0.1 cm. Cymes of order 1. Peduncles glabrous or pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 5–10 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 2 tenth of the base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangulate, glabrous, 0.4 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4–5 -merous. Calyx glabrous, margin entire, 2–3 mm in diam. Corolla 2–2.5 mm, petals free (?). Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes glabrous. Ovary ovoid (en fruit), glabrous, stigma capitate or columnar, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit ovoid, 3 mm in diam., 4 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Ecuador (selon LOESENER 1901) Peru, 2000–2300 m, "Bosque" andin de pérennes et décidues: forêt basse sempervirente.
