Ilex retusa f. glabra Steyerm.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Shrub, evergreen, 1.3 m tall. Current year's branchlets pubescent (poils très courts, invisibles à l'oeil nu). Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, brownish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present or absent or hardly visible (présentes seulement sur les rameaux de plus d'une année). Internodes 0.3–2 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.3–0.5 mm. Petiole glabrous or pubescent (poils très courts), rough or grooved surface, 3–4 mm. Lamina elliptic, oblong (1:2), 3.5–5 X, 1.7–3 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base acute or obtuse or rounded. Apex rounded or obtuse, mucronate (t"t caduque). Apex retuse or rounded. Margin revolute (bordure épaissie), crenate, teeth inconspicuous. Teeth 6–9 ca., over the entire length of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed or flat, glabrous or pubescent on proximal half (poils très courts). Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially obscure, 4–5 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly present.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Male flowers.— Cymes of order 2–3. Peduncles glabrous (quelques poils épars). Peduncles of order 1 5–8 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 7 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 2–3.5 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 4–6 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 3 1.5–2 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Bracts deltoids, pubescent, 1–1.5 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoid, glabrous or pubescent, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4 -merous, white or green. Calyx glabrous (quelques poils épars), 1.5–2 mm in diam., margin ciliate or dentate. Corolla 2.5 mm, petals connate on, petals 20 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis equal to corolla or shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary pyramidal (pseudostyle développé), glabrous.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Venezuela (Cerro Duida), 1675 m, sommet du Cerro Duida, forêt de vallée.
