Ilex retusa f. major Steyerm.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Shrub, evergreen, 1.5–3 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous or pubescent. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, brownish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present or absent or hardly visible (des lenticelles semblent être présentes sur les rameaux de plus d'une année). Internodes 0.3–3 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.5 mm. Petiole glabrous or pubescent (poils très courts), rough or grooved surface, 3–7 mm. Lamina elliptic or obovate, oblong (1:2), 3.5–9 X, 1.5–4 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base acute or obtuse. Apex obtuse, mucronate. Apex retuse or rounded. Margin revolute, crenate, teeth inconspicuous. Teeth 10–14 ca., over the entire length of the margin. Midbrid adaxially flat (très légèrement abaissée), glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident or obscure, 5–7 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly present.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.2–0.5 cm. Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 5–6 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 5–7 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 1.5–2 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Bracts deltoids, pubescent, 0.7 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoid, pubescent, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4 -merous, white or green. Calyx pubescent, 1.5–2 mm in diam., margin ciliate or dentate.

Female flowers.— Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles pubescent (poils très courts). Peduncles of order 1 4–6 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 4–6 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 2 1.5–2 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 1–4 tenth of the base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoids, pubescent, 0.5–0.6 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4 -merous. Calyx pubescent (poils très courts, invisibles à l'oeil nu), margin ciliate or dentate, 3–3.5 mm in diam. Ovary spherical, glabrous, stigma capitate.

Fruits.— Fruit spherical, 3–3.5 mm in diam., 3–3.5 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Venezuela (Cerro Duida), 1000–1700 m, sommet du Cerro Duida, Savana Hills.
