Ilex rimbachii Standley

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree, evergreen, 15–20 m tall. 50 cm dbh. Current year's branchlets hirsute. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, greyish or brownish, pubescent, dense short trichomes or dense long trichomes (diminue avec les années). Lenticels on current year's branchlets present or absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0–3.5 cm. Stipules caducous, deltoid or linear-triangular, 0.4–2 mm. Petiole pubescent (hirsute), smooth surface, 1–4 mm. Lamina elliptic or obovate (rarement ovale), orbiculate (1:1) to oblong (1:2), 1.8–4.5 X, 0.9–3 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially or pubescent abaxially (le long de la marge). Base obtuse or rounded or truncate. Apex rounded to acute, mucronate. Apex emarginate or rounded or acuminate. Acumen 0.1–0.2 cm. Margin revolute, entire or dentate, teeth inconspicuous or conspicuous. Teeth 0–3 ca., on the distal half of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed, pubescent. Midbrid abaxially raised, pubescent. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 4–7 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident or obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly absent.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse or solitary dichasium, proliferating.

Male flowers.— Cymes of order 2–3. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 6–15 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 5–7 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 1.8–5 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–8 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 3 0–2.5 mm. Bracts deltoids, pubescent, 0.5–2 mm (souvent arrondie et se développant en petite feuille), margin ciliate or dentate. Pherophylls of order 1 subopposite, deltoid or linear-triangular, pubescent, 0–0.6 mm, margin ciliate. Male flowers 5–6 -merous, white. Calyx pubescent, 1.8–3.2 mm in diam., margin ciliate or dentate. Corolla 2.5–3.5 mm, petals connate on, petals 5–10 % of their length. Apex margin ciliate. Stamens at the anthesis equal to corolla. Rudimentary ovary subglobulous or flattened, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Cymes of order 1. Peduncles pubescent (hirsute). Peduncles of order 1 5–10 mm. Bracts linear-triangulate. Female flowers 4–6 -merous, white. Calyx pubescent (hirsute), margin ciliate or dentate, 5 mm in diam. Corolla 3.5 mm, petals connate on, petals 20 % of their length. Apex margin ciliate (finement). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous (sauf sur les anthères). Ovary spherical, pubescent (hirsute), stigma capitate, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit red or black, spherical, 4–6 mm in diam., 5 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Ecuador (W. Cordillera, Balsapampa), 2100–2600 m, forêts, végétation primaire en zone humide.

Flowering.— August.
