Ilex rupicola Kunth

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Shrub, evergreen, 1–3 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, reddish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present. Internodes 0.3–1 cm. Stipules caducous. Petiole glabrous, smooth surface, 3 mm. Lamina ovate to elliptic, orbiculate (1:1) to oblong (1:2), 1.5–4 X, 1.2–3.5 cm, coriaceous (épais), glabrous abaxially. Base rounded to truncate. Apex rounded, mucronate (parfois absent). Apex emarginate or rounded. Margin revolute, crenate or dentate, teeth inconspicuous or conspicuous. Teeth 6–7 ca., over the entire length of the margin or on the distal half of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed or flat or raised (imprimée à la base, plane au sommet et proéminente au centre), glabrous. Midbrid abaxially flat or raised (parfois légèrement imprimée au sommet), glabrous (à part quelques poils à la base). Secondary veins abaxially evident, 5–7 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly present.

Inflorescences.— Solitary dichasium.

Male flowers.— Cymes of order 3–4. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 10–15 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 6–7 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 1–2 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 6 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 3 1 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 5 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 4 0.5 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite or subopposite, linear-triangular, pubescent, 2 mm, margin ciliate. Male flowers 4 -merous, white. Calyx pubescent, 2–3 mm in diam., margin entire. Corolla 2 mm, petals connate on, petals 90 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary subglobulous or flattened, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Cymes of order 2–3. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 7–10 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 7–9 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 2 2–4 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 8 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 3 1 mm (?). Pherophylls of order 3 at 5 tenth of the base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoids, pubescent, 1.5–3 mm, margin ciliate. Female flowers 4 -merous, white. Calyx pubescent, margin entire (quelques poils sur la marge), 3 mm in diam. Corolla 3 mm, petals connate on, petals 80 % of their length. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes ovate, glabrous. Ovary ovoid (fruit immature), glabrous, stigma mamillate (très courtement colomnaire), stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit ovoid or spherical, 3–4 mm in diam., 2–4 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Ecuador (selon LOESENER 1901), 2800–3700 m, étendue désertique (p ramo) avec quelques buissons.
