Ilex savannarum in litt. Wurdack

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree or shrub, evergreen, 1–4 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year reddish, glabrous. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.2 mm. Petiole 1–3 mm. Lamina obovate, oblong (1:2), (2.5–)4.5–6 X, (1–)1.5–2.5(–3) cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base cuneate. Apex rounded. Apex retuse or rounded. Margin crenate to dentate. Teeth 5–8 ca., over the entire length of the margin. Secondary veins 5–7 pairs. Ponctuation abaxiallly present.

Inflorescences.— Thyrsoid, heterocladic, with subthyrsoids alternate.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 1–2 cm. Cymes of order 1. Peduncles of order 1 1.5–2 mm. Male flowers 4 -merous. Calyx glabrous, 1.2–1.5 mm in diam., margin ciliate or dentate. Corolla 1.8 mm, petals connate on, petals 30 % of their length. Stamens at the anthesis equal to corolla. Rudimentary ovary glabrous.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 1–2 cm. Cymes of order 1. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 1.5–2 mm. Female flowers 4 -merous. Calyx glabrous, margin ciliate or dentate, 1.7–3.5 mm in diam. (en fructification pour la plus grande valeur). Corolla 2.2–2.3 mm, petals connate on, petals 20–25 % of their length. Ovary spherical, glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit spherical, 5 mm in diam., 5 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Venezuela (Amazonas: Caño Yagua, bassin du Río Atabapo, Río Guainía et Río Pasimoni), 100–400 m, Savanes sur sable blanc le long des cours d'eau et des forêts, îles d'arbustes dans les savanes.
