Ilex scopulorum Kunth

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree, evergreen. Current year's branchlets pubescent. Branchlets older than one year greyish to brownish. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present. Internodes 0.1–1.5 cm. Stipules persistent, linear-triangular, 0.5 mm. Petiole rough or grooved surface, 2–7 mm. Lamina elliptic to obovate, orbiculate (1:1) to oblong (1:2), 2.4–5.5 X, 1.3–3.1 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base acute to rounded. Apex rounded to obtuse, not mucronate. Apex rounded. Margin plane or revolute (étroitement), dentate, teeth inconspicuous. Teeth 6–8 ca., on the distal half of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed to flat, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 5–8 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly present.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Male flowers.— Cymes of order 3. Peduncles of order 1 5–14 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 0–5 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 2–6 mm. Bracts linear-triangular, 0.5–1.5 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 linear-triangular, 0.5–1 mm. Male flowers 4–5 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous to pubescent, 3.5–5.5 mm in diam., margin entire. Corolla 3.5–6 mm, petals connate on, petals 20–30 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary pyramidal, glabrous.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Ecuador, 3500 m, Paramo.

Flowering.— August.
