Ilex sessiliflora Triana

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree or shrub, evergreen, 2–15 m tall. Current year's branchlets pubescent. Branchlets older than one year rough, greyish, glabrous (glabrescent) or pubescent, dense short trichomes. Lenticels on current year's branchlets absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0.2–2 cm. Stipules caducous, deltoid or linear-triangular (parfois divisés en 2–3 parties filiformes), 1 mm. Petiole pubescent, rough or grooved surface, 3–7 mm. Lamina elliptic, oblong (1:2), 1.5–6 X, 1.2–4 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially or pubescent abaxially (glabrescent dessus, poils longs et espacés dessous). Base acute to rounded. Apex obtuse, mucronate. Apex rounded. Margin revolute or rolled up (parfois à l'état sec), dentate, teeth conspicuous. Teeth 10–30 ca., over the entire length of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, pubescent. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 5–9 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly absent.

Inflorescences.— Solitary dichasium.

Male flowers.— Cymes of order 4. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 10–45 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 9–10 tenth from the base (la fleur d'ordre 1 est souvent avortée au niveau des préfeuilles). Peduncles of order 2 2–9 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–5 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 3 1–5 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 0–6 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 4 0.5–1.5 mm. Pherophylls of order 4 at 0–6 tenth from base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangular, pubescent (poils épars assez longs), 0.5–1 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous or pubescent (poils épars), 1–4 mm in diam., margin entire. Corolla 3–4 mm, petals connate on, petals 30–40 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Rudimentary ovary pyramidal, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Cymes of order 1–3. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 10–22 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 8–9 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 2 2–5 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–5 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 3 1–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 0–1 tenth of the base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoids or linear-triangulate, pubescent (rarement glabres), 0.8–3 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4–5 -merous, white. Calyx pubescent (parfois quelques rares poils très courts), margin entire, 2–5 mm in diam. Corolla 3–5 mm, petals connate on, petals 20–30 % of their length. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary ovoid to spherical, glabrous, stigma capitate, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit ovoid, 3–4 mm in diam., 4–5 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Colombia Peru Brazil, 3400–4000 m, Végétation andine de haute montagne: forêts sous la zone de la Puna.

Flowering.— May to November.
