Ilex sideroxyloides Griseb.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree, 5–8 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, greyish or reddish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0.2–1.2 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.6–0.8 mm. Petiole glabrous, smooth surface, 4–12 mm. Lamina elliptic or obovate, oblong (1:2), 2–7.5 X, 1–4 cm, papyraceous or coriaceous. Base attenuate or acute or obtuse or rounded. Apex rounded or obtuse, mucronate. Apex retuse (rarement) or rounded or acuminate. Acumen 0.5 cm. Margin revolute, entire. Midbrid adaxially impressed or flat, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially obscure, 4–6 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly absent.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, non proliferating or proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary or terminal. Thyrses axes 0.3–6 cm. Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 5–6 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 5 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 2–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Bracts deltoids, glabrous, -1 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoid, glabrous, 0.3–0.5 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous, 1.5–2 mm in diam., margin entire. Corolla 2–2.5 mm, petals connate on, petals 15–20 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis equal to corolla. Rudimentary ovary subglobulous or flattened, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary or terminal. Thyrses axes 0.1–5 cm. Cymes of order 1. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 5–11 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 3–6 tenth of the base. Bracts linear-triangulate, glabrous, 1–1.5 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite or subopposite or alternate, linear-triangulate, glabrous, -0.5 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 5–6 -merous. Calyx glabrous, margin entire, 2.5–4 mm in diam. Corolla 2.5–3 mm, petals connate on, petals 15–20 % of their length. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes sagittate or ovate, glabrous. Ovary ovoid, glabrous, stigma mamillate, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit spherical, 5–7 mm in diam., 5–7 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— The Antilles, Jamaica or Windward Islands (Martinique), 1500–1800 m.

Flowering.— April or December.
