Ilex spinulosa Cuatrec.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree or shrub, evergreen, 5–10 m tall. Current year's branchlets hirsute. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed or rough, brownish or reddish, pubescent, dense short trichomes or dense long trichomes. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present. Internodes 0–0.5 cm. Stipules persistent, linear-triangular, 0.6–1.1 mm. Petiole pubescent (longs poils disséminés), smooth surface, 1–2 mm (limbe décurrent jusqu'à la base du pétiole). Lamina ovate or elliptic (rarement elliptique), orbiculate (1:1) or oblong (1:2), 0.7–2 X, 0.5–1.4 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially or pubescent abaxially (glabre dessus, longs poils épars dessous). Base obtuse or rounded. Apex obtuse or acute, mucronate. Apex rounded or acuminate. Acumen 0–0.1 cm. Margin revolute, dentate, teeth conspicuous. Teeth 1–10 ca., over the entire length of the margin or on the distal half of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous or pubescent. Midbrid abaxially raised, pubescent. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 3–6 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident or obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly absent.

Inflorescences.— Solitary dichasium.

Male flowers.— Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 2–5 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 3–7 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 0.5–1.5 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite or subopposite, deltoid or linear-triangular, glabrous, 0.2–0.5 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous, 1.3–2 mm in diam., margin entire (souvent irregulière). Corolla 1.5–2 mm, petals connate on, petals 5–10 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary subglobulous or flattened, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Cymes of order 1. Peduncles pubescent (pileux). Peduncles of order 1 3–4 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 3–4 tenth of the base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoids, pubescent, 0.5–0.7 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4 -merous, white. Calyx pubescent, margin entire, 2–3 mm in diam. Corolla 3.5–4 mm, petals connate on, petals 10–20 % of their length (?). Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary spherical, glabrous, stigma columnar, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit ovoid (immature), 2.5–3 mm in diam., 3.5–4.5 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Colombia (Valle, Cauca), 3100–3600 m, Páramos.
