Ilex stenophylla Steyerm. non Koidz. 1923

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Shrub, evergreen, 1.5–3 m tall. Current year's branchlets pubescent. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, reddish, glabrous (mais recouvert de restes de mousses). Lenticels on current year's branchlets absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0.1–1.5 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.5 mm. Petiole pubescent (surtout sur les jeunes feuilles, au centre du pétiole), rough or grooved surface, 2.5–4 mm. Lamina elliptic, oblong (1:2) or lanceolate (1:3), 3–4.7 X, 0.9–1.6 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base cuneate or acute. Apex obtuse or acute, mucronate (parfois caduque). Apex emarginate or acuminate. Acumen 0–0.2 cm. Margin revolute, crenate, teeth inconspicuous or conspicuous. Teeth 7–10 ca., over the entire length of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed or flat, pubescent. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially obscure, 4–6 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly present.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.6–0.8 cm. Cymes of order 3–5. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 6.5–8 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 7–9 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 2–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 5–7 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 3 1.5–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 5–7 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 4 0.5–1 mm. Pherophylls of order 4 at 0–4 tenth from base. Peduncles of order 5 1 mm. Pherophylls of order 5 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Bracts deltoids, pubescent, 1 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoid, pubescent, 0.3–0.5 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4 -merous, white. Calyx pubescent, 1–1.5 mm in diam., margin ciliate or dentate. Corolla 1.5 mm, petals connate on, petals 15–20 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis equal to corolla or shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary subpear-shaped, glabrous.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Venezuela (Cerro Duida), 1095–1520 m, face de falaises exposée à l'humidité, avec des bromeliaceae.
