Ilex summa Steyerm.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Shrub, evergreen, 0.5–2 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year rough, greyish or brownish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0.2–1 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.5 mm. Petiole glabrous, rough or grooved surface, 3–7 mm. Lamina elliptic, oblong (1:2), 2.5–4.5 X, 1.5–3 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base obtuse or rounded. Apex rounded or obtuse, mucronate. Apex rounded or acuminate. Acumen 0.1–0.2 cm. Margin revolute, dentate, teeth conspicuous. Teeth 3–5 ca., on the distal half of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous or pubescent on proximal half (poils très courts). Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 4–5 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly absent (ponctuations sur les deux côtés de la feuille (?) selon Steyermark. PAL au MO: ce sont des points noirs que l'on peut aisément enlever avec une pointe. S'agit-il de sécrétions venant de la plante ou de dépôts d'animaux? On observe des taches noires dessous, mais pas de ponctuation.).

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary or terminal. Thyrses axes 2–10 cm. Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 7–15 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 2–3 tenth of the base or 6–7 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 2 4–6 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth of the base. Bracts linear-triangulate, glabrous, 1–2 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoids, glabrous, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4 -merous. Calyx glabrous, margin entire, 2–3 mm in diam. Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary spherical, glabrous, stigma capitate, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit red, spherical, 6–7 mm in diam., 6–7 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Venezuela (Bolívar: Aparamán-tepui, Auyán-tepui, Kamarkawarai-tepui), 2400–2500 m, Exposed sandstone rocks.
