Ilex tarapotina Loes.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Shrub, evergreen, 2–6 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous or pubescent (rares poils courts). Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, brownish or reddish, glabrous or pubescent, sparse trichomes. Lenticels on current year's branchlets absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0.7–3 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.8–1.2 mm. Petiole glabrous, rough or grooved surface, 8–20 mm. Lamina elliptic, oblong (1:2) to lanceolate (1:3), 6–10.5 X, 2.2–4 cm, papyraceous or coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base acute or obtuse or rounded. Apex obtuse to acute, mucronate. Apex acuminate or cuspidate. Acumen 0.7–1.7 cm. Margin revolute, entire. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous (à part quelques poils très courts). Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially obscure, 8–10(–12) pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly present (faiblement visible, même à fort grossissement).

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.3–1 cm. Cymes of order 2–3. Peduncles glabrous or pubescent (rares poils très courts). Peduncles of order 1 4–17 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 7–9 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 1–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–3 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 3 0.5–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 0–2 tenth from the base. Bracts deltoids or linear-triangular, glabrous or pubescent, 0.5–1.5 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite or subopposite, deltoid or linear-triangular, glabrous, 0.5–1 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4–5 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous, 1.5–2 mm in diam., margin entire (sépales linéaires). Corolla 2.5–3 mm, petals connate on, petals 15–25 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary pyramidal, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.1–0.3 cm. Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 6–15 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 5–7 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 2 3.5–5 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth of the base. Bracts linear-triangulate, pubescent (poils épars), 1–1.5 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoids or linear-triangulate, glabrous (rares poils ?), 0.5–1 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4–6 -merous. Calyx glabrous, margin entire, 2–3 mm in diam. Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary spherical, glabrous, stigma mamillate, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit green (immature), spherical, 4–7 mm in diam., 4–7 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Peru (Tarapoto) Brazil, 1100–1700 m, Forêt dense humide andine sempervirente: forêt basse des nuages. Marais ouvert à Sphagnum.

Flowering.— July.
