Ilex taubertiana Loes.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree, evergreen, 6 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, reddish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present. Internodes 0.3–1.8 cm. Stipules caducous, deltoid, 0.2–0.5 mm. Petiole glabrous, smooth surface, 7–18 mm. Lamina ovate to elliptic, oblong (1:2), 4–6 X, 1.5–3.5 cm, membranous to papyraceous, glabrous abaxially. Base obtuse to rounded. Apex obtuse, mucronate. Apex acuminate to cuspidate. Acumen 0.5–0.9 cm. Margin revolute, dentate, teeth conspicuous. Teeth 4–6 ca., on the distal half of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 6–8 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly absent.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse or solitary dichasium, proliferating.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Cymes of order 2–3. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 10–35 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 7–8 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 2 2–6 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 3–4 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 3 2–5 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 0–1 tenth of the base. Bracts linear-triangulate, glabrous, 0.5–0.8 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangulate, glabrous, 0.5–0.8 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous, margin entire, 1.5–2 mm in diam. Corolla 2 mm, petals connate on, petals 20–30 % of their length. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary spherical to flattened, glabrous, stigma capitate, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit of another color than red, black or green (grayish brown selon Galle 1997), ovoid to spherical, 2–3(–4.5) mm in diam. (4.5 selon Galle 1997), 2–3 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Brazil (Rio de Janeiro, Santa Catarina, Parana), 50–850 m, Forêt hygrophile.

Flowering.— January or December.
