Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree, evergreen, 10–45 m tall. 10–100 cm dbh. Current year's branchlets pubescent (poils très courts visibles à la loupe). Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, greyish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present. Internodes 0.1–1 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.5–1 mm. Petiole pubescent (duvet très fin visible à la loupe sur les jeunes feuilles), rough or grooved surface, 4–8 mm. Lamina elliptic, oblong (1:2), 5–11 X, 2.5–4.5 cm, papyraceous, glabrous abaxially. Base cuneate or acute. Apex obtuse or acute, mucronate. Apex acuminate. Acumen 0.1–1 cm. Margin plane (très finement révolutée), entire. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 8–11 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly absent.

Inflorescences.— Thyrsoid, heterocladic, with subthyrsoids decussate.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary or terminal. Thyrses axes 2 cm. Cymes of order 1–3. Peduncles of order 1 8–13 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 4–6 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 3–5 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 4–6 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 3 1–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangular, glabrous, 0.8–1 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4–5 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous, 2–2.5 mm in diam., margin entire. Corolla 2–2.5 mm, petals connate on, petals 10–20 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary pyramidal, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Cymes of order 2–3. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 10–16 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 7–8 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 2 4–6 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 4–6 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 3 2.5–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 0–1 tenth of the base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangulate, glabrous, 0.5–1 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4–5 -merous. Calyx glabrous, margin entire, 2.5–3 mm in diam.

Fruits.— Fruit red, ovoid or spherical, 4–5 mm in diam., 5–6 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— Central America, Belize or Honduras or Nicaragua, Localement commun, dans des forêts sempervirentes ou décidues, couramment avec des pins, en zone atlantique.

Flowering.— April or May.

Vernacular name.— Areno.

Use.— Utilisé pour la construction.
