Ilex teratopis Loes.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree (petit), evergreen, 3–8 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, reddish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0.5–1.2 cm. Stipules caducous, deltoid (arrondis et larges de 2 mm), 2 mm. Petiole glabrous, smooth surface, 10–16 mm. Lamina elliptic to obovate, orbiculate (1:1) to oblong (1:2), 9–15.5 X, 5.5–8 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base cuneate to rounded. Apex truncate to obtuse, not mucronate. Apex retuse or rounded. Margin revolute (finement), dentate, teeth conspicuous. Teeth 15–20 ca., over the entire length of the margin. Midbrid adaxially flat (parcourue de petits canaux dus à la dessication), glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 12–15 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident (peu denses). Ponctuation abaxiallly present.

Inflorescences.— Thyrsoid, heterocladic, with subthyrsoids decussate.

Male flowers.— Cymes of order 4–5. Peduncles glabrous (à part quelques poils très courts). Peduncles of order 1 40–50 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 6–8 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 10–15 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 5–6 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 3 4–5 mm. Peduncles of order 4 1–2 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoid, pubescent (quelques poils sur la marge et à l'apex), 5–6 mm, margin ciliate (faiblement). Male flowers 4 -merous (4–5-mères selon _$Beck 8684_£), white. Calyx pubescent (poils courts, plus nombreux vers l'apex et sur le centre), 3–5 mm in diam., margin entire (mais munie de quelques poils). Corolla 4–5 mm, petals connate on, petals 15–20 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary subglobulous or flattened, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Cymes of order 4–5. Peduncles glabrous (poils très courts). Peduncles of order 1 20–35 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 8–9 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 2 2–4 mm. Peduncles of order 3 1 mm. Peduncles of order 4 0–1 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoids, pubescent, 5–6 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4 -merous, white. Calyx pubescent (poils très courts), margin entire, 5–6 mm in diam. Ovary glabrous, stigma capitate, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit black (selon _$Pearce s.n._£) or of another color than red, black or green (bleus selon _!Beck 13855_£), spherical, 6–8 mm in diam., 5–6 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Peru Bolivia, 2000–3300 m, "Bosque" andins de pérennes et décidues: forêt de montagne en zone de brouillard. "Bosque de Ceja" (Bolivie).
