Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree or shrub (parfois), evergreen, (2–)5–6(–15) m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, reddish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present. Internodes 0.2–1.5(–3) cm. Stipules persistent, deltoid, 0.5 mm. Petiole glabrous, rough or grooved surface, (3–)5–12(–19) mm. Lamina elliptic or obovate, oblong (1:2) or lanceolate (1:3) (oblancéolé), 5.5–11.5 X, 3–5.5 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base cuneate or acute. Apex rounded or obtuse or acute, mucronate. Apex emarginate or rounded. Margin revolute, entire or dentate, teeth inconspicuous. Teeth 1–7 ca., on the distal half of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 6–8 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly present (irrégulière).

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, non proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.1–0.2 cm. Cymes of order 2–3. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 5–10 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 6–8 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 2–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–2 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 3 2–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Bracts deltoids, glabrous, 0.2–0.5 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangular, glabrous, 0.2–0.5 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4–6 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous, 1.5–2 mm in diam., margin ciliate or dentate. Corolla 2.5–3 mm, petals connate on, petals 15–20 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary pyramidal, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.1–0.2 cm. Cymes of order 1. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 4–11 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 1–3 tenth of the base. Bracts linear-triangulate, glabrous, 0.5–1 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangulate, glabrous, 0.5–1 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 5–6 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous, margin entire (mais irrégulière), 2–4 mm in diam. Corolla 3.5–4 mm, petals connate on, petals 15–20 % of their length. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary ovoid, glabrous, stigma mamillate, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit red (foncé), ovoid, 6–8 mm in diam., 7–9 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Brazil (Bahia, Goiás, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, São Paulo, Santa Catarina) Paraguay (Alto Paraná) Argentina (nordeste de Misiones), zonas turbosas au Paraguay, au Brésil dans des terrains avec peu d'humidité édaphique.

Flowering.— September or October or November or December.
