Ilex thyrsiflora Reissek

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Evergreen. Current year's branchlets pubescent (rares poils). Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, reddish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present (rares). Internodes 0.3–1.5 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.3–0.5 mm. Petiole glabrous, rough or grooved surface, 3–7 mm. Lamina elliptic, orbiculate (1:1) to oblong (1:2), 5–9 X, 3–6 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base rounded. Apex obtuse, mucronate. Apex acuminate. Acumen 0.3–0.5 cm. Margin revolute, dentate, teeth inconspicuous. Teeth 10–12 ca., over the entire length of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 5–7 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly present.

Inflorescences.— Thyrsoid (indéterminé), heterocladic, with subthyrsoids alternate.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 5–10 cm. Cymes of order 3–4. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 4–9 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 7–8 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 1.5–2.5 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 5–7 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 3 1 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 4 1 mm. Pherophylls of order 4 at 0–1 tenth from base. Bracts linear-triangular (linéaires ou triangulaires), glabrous or pubescent, 0.5–1.5 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoid, glabrous or pubescent, 0.5 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4 -merous. Calyx pubescent, 1.5 mm in diam., margin ciliate or dentate (cilié). Corolla 2 mm, petals connate on, petals 20–30 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary pyramidal, glabrous.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Venezuela.
