Ilex uniflora var. paramensis Cuatrec.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree, evergreen, 4–12 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed or rough (nombreuses cicatrices de feuilles), greyish or brownish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0–0.2 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.5–1.2 mm. Petiole glabrous, smooth surface or rough or grooved surface, 2.5–6 mm. Lamina elliptic to obovate, orbiculate (1:1) to oblong (1:2), 0.8–2.2 X, 0.6–1.5 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base cuneate to rounded (rarement cordée). Apex rounded to acute, mucronate or not mucronate. Apex rounded (rarement légèrement émarginé). Margin plane or revolute (à la base), crenate or dentate, teeth inconspicuous or conspicuous. Teeth 5–9 ca., over the entire length of the margin or on the distal half of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 4–6 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident or obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly present or absent (peu nombreuse et peu visible).

Inflorescences.— Solitary dichasium.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes peu visible et peu nombreuse. Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 2–21 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 5–8 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 0.5–3.5 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Bracts deltoids (parfois développées en feuille réduite), glabrous, 2.5–5 mm, margin ciliate or dentate. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite or subopposite, deltoid or linear-triangular, glabrous, 0.7–1 mm, margin entire or margin ciliate. Male flowers 5–6 -merous. Calyx glabrous or pubescent, 2.5–4 mm in diam., margin entire or margin ciliate or dentate. Corolla 3.5–5 mm, petals connate on, petals 20–40 % of their length. Apex margin entire or ciliate. Stamens at the anthesis shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary subglobulous or flattened, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Cymes of order 1. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 2.8–5 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 3–5 tenth of the base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite or subopposite, deltoids or linear-triangulate, glabrous, 0.3–0.8 mm, margin ciliate. Female flowers 4–5 -merous, yellow (à l'extérieur). Calyx glabrous or pubescent, margin ciliate or dentate, 3.5–5 mm in diam. Corolla 3–5 mm, petals free. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary spherical, glabrous, stigma capitate, stigma glabrous.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Colombia (Páramo de Bavaya), 3300–3400 m, Versant occidental de la cordillère centrale; páramo.
