Ilex uniflora Benth.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree (petit) or shrub, evergreen, 1.5–8 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous or pubescent. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed or rough, greyish or brownish, glabrous or pubescent, sparse trichomes or dense short trichomes. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present or absent or hardly visible (peu visibles). Internodes 0–2 cm. Stipules caducous, deltoid or linear-triangular, 0.3–1 mm. Petiole glabrous (sauf parfois quelques rares poils isolés) or pubescent, smooth surface or rough or grooved surface, 2–7.5 mm. Lamina ovate to obovate, orbiculate (1:1) to oblong (1:2), 1.2–4.5 X, 0.8–2.8 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base cuneate to truncate (décurrente). Apex rounded to acute, mucronate. Apex emarginate or rounded. Margin plane or revolute (principalement à la base), crenate or dentate, teeth inconspicuous or conspicuous. Teeth 6–13 ca., over the entire length of the margin or on the distal half of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous or pubescent. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 4–8 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly absent.

Inflorescences.— Solitary dichasium.

Male flowers.— Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles glabrous or pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 2–11 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 4–10 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 1.5–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–5 tenth from the base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoid or linear-triangular, glabrous or pubescent, 0.5–1.5 mm, margin entire or margin ciliate. Male flowers 5–6 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous (à part quelques rares poils courts), 2.5–5 mm in diam., margin entire or margin ciliate or dentate. Corolla 3–5 mm, petals connate on, petals 15–40 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary pyramidal or subglobulous or flattened, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Cymes of order 1. Peduncles glabrous or pubescent (surtout dans sa partie inférieure). Peduncles of order 1 5–8 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 4–8 tenth of the base. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite or subopposite, deltoids or linear-triangulate, glabrous, 0.2–1.5 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 5–6 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous, margin ciliate or dentate, 3.5–5 mm in diam. Ovary glabrous, stigma capitate, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit spherical or flattened, 3–6 mm in diam., 3.5–4.5 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Colombia Ecuador Peru, 2200–3600 m, Forêt dense humide andine sempervirente, "Bosque" andin de pérennes et décidues: forêt dense sur le Páramo (Colombie), forêt de brouillard (Equateur), forêt basse humide de montagne (Pérou).

Flowering.— April to August (Pérou; mars à décembre en Colombie).
