Ilex vacciniifolia in litt. Klotzsch ex Reissek

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree or shrub, evergreen, 1–4 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous. Branchlets older than one year glabrous. Internodes 0.8 cm. Stipules linear-triangular, 0.5 mm. Petiole glabrous, 4–6 mm. Lamina elliptic to obovate, oblong (1:2), 2.4–3.7 X, 1–1.9 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base cuneate to obtuse. Apex rounded to obtuse. Apex rounded. Margin revolute (fortement), entire. Midbrid adaxially impressed. Midbrid abaxially raised. Secondary veins abaxially obscure, 4–5 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly present (fide Steyermark 1988).

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, non proliferating or proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 7 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 6–8 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 2 mm. Male flowers 4–5 -merous. Calyx glabrous, 3.5 mm in diam. Corolla 2.5–3 mm, petals connate on, petals 10–20 % of their length. Stamens at the anthesis equal to corolla or shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary pyramidal, glabrous.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Venezuela (Bolívar: Acopán-tepui, Auyán-tepui, Ilú-tepui, Macizo del Chimantá (Toronó-tepui), Murisipán-tepui, Ptari-tepui, Roraima-tepui; Sucre) British Guyana, 2000–2800 m, Dwarf Bonnetia forests, montane thickets, rocky open sandstone plateaus and crevasses on summits and upper slopes of tepuis.
