Ilex velutinulosa Cuatrec.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree, evergreen. Current year's branchlets pubescent. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed or rough (mais cannelé), brownish, pubescent, dense short trichomes. Lenticels on current year's branchlets absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0–1.5 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.7–2 mm. Petiole glabrous or pubescent (feuilles âgées), rough or grooved surface, 5–10 mm. Lamina elliptic to obovate, oblong (1:2) to lanceolate (1:3), 2.9–5.5 X, 1.3–2.4 cm, coriaceous, glabrous abaxially (parfois quelques poils à la base sur la face supérieure). Base cuneate to obtuse. Apex rounded to obtuse (rarement tronqué ou aigu), mucronate or not mucronate. Apex emarginate or rounded. Margin plane or revolute (mais bordure épaissie à la base), crenate or dentate, teeth inconspicuous. Teeth 4–8 ca., over the entire length of the margin or on the distal half of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed or flat or raised (légèrement), glabrous or pubescent on proximal half. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially obscure, 3–7 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly absent.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.2–0.3 cm. Cymes of order 1. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 3–8 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 3–7 tenth of the base. Bracts deltoids or linear-triangulate (parfois développée en minuscule feuille), glabrous or pubescent, 0.5–3.5 mm, margin entire or margin ciliate or dentate. Pherophylls of order 1 subopposite, deltoids or linear-triangulate, pubescent, 0.3–0.5 mm, margin entire or margin ciliate. Female flowers 4 -merous. Calyx glabrous or pubescent, margin entire or margin ciliate or dentate, 2.5–4.5 mm in diam. Corolla 3.5–4 mm, petals connate on, petals 10–20 % of their length. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary ovoid, pubescent, stigma capitate, stigma pubescent.

Fruits.— Fruit ovoid, 2.8–5 mm in diam., 3.5–7 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Colombia (Mountains east of Las Vegas), 3000–3300 m, Forêt de la cordillère orientale.
