Ilex villosula Loes.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree (petit) or shrub, evergreen, 3–8 m tall. 8 cm dbh (pour un arbre de 8 m). Current year's branchlets hirsute. Branchlets older than one year rough, greyish or reddish, glabrous or pubescent, dense short trichomes. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present or absent or hardly visible (?). Internodes 0.1–0.8 cm. Stipules caducous, deltoid or linear-triangular, 0.3 mm. Petiole pubescent, smooth surface, 2–4 mm. Lamina elliptic to obovate, oblong (1:2), 2.5–4 X, 1.2–2.2 cm, coriaceous, pubescent abaxially. Base cuneate to acute. Apex rounded, mucronate. Apex retuse or rounded (très légèrement rétu). Margin revolute, entire. Midbrid adaxially impressed, pubescent. Midbrid abaxially raised, pubescent. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 4–7 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident. Ponctuation abaxiallly absent.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.2–0.5 cm. Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 4–8 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 3–7 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 2 1–2 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 1–2 tenth of the base. Bracts deltoids or linear-triangulate, pubescent, 0.5–1.2 mm, margin entire (mais poilue). Pherophylls of order 1 subopposite, deltoids or linear-triangulate, pubescent, 0.2–0.7 mm, margin entire (mais poilues). Female flowers 4–5 -merous. Calyx pubescent, margin entire (très irrégulière), 1–2 mm in diam. Corolla 1.5–2 mm, petals free (chaque étamine est soudée à un pétale). Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary ovoid, glabrous, stigma capitate or columnar, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit red to black, spherical, 3–4 mm in diam., 3 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Peru (Andes, Yambrasbamba; Amazonas, Bongara, Laguna Pomacocha), 1600–3500 m, "Bosque" andin de pérennes et décidues, végétation andine de haute montagne: forêt basse des nuages, forêt haute de montagne dominée par Dictyocaryum.

Flowering.— December (probablement, car on trouve des fruits verts en février).
