Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree or shrub, evergreen, 1.5–30 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous or pubescent (quelques poils courts et espacés). Branchlets older than one year rough (l'écorce est fendue), greyish or reddish, glabrous or pubescent, dense short trichomes. Lenticels on current year's branchlets present (mais rares et peu visible). Internodes 0.5–4 cm. Stipules caducous, deltoid or linear-triangular, 0.1–1 mm. Petiole glabrous, rough or grooved surface, 4–18 mm. Lamina ovate to obovate, oblong (1:2), 4–13 X, 2.5–6 cm, papyraceous or coriaceous, glabrous abaxially. Base cuneate to rounded. Apex obtuse to acute, mucronate or not mucronate. Apex retuse or emarginate or acuminate. Acumen 0.1–1.4 cm. Margin revolute, entire. Midbrid adaxially impressed, glabrous or pubescent (poils courts et peu nombreux). Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous or pubescent (poils très courts). Secondary veins abaxially evident (quoique peu marquées), 5–10 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially evident or obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly present.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, non proliferating or proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary or issued from several axillary buds. Thyrses axes 0.1–0.6 cm. Cymes of order 1–3. Peduncles pubescent (rares poils courts). Peduncles of order 1 3–10 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 5–7 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 0.5–2 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 3 0.5 mm. Pherophylls of order 3 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Bracts deltoids or linear-triangular, pubescent, 0.2–0.7 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite or subopposite, deltoid or linear-triangular, pubescent, 0.2–0.5 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4–5 -merous, white. Calyx pubescent, 1–2 mm in diam., margin entire or margin ciliate or dentate. Corolla 1–2 mm, petals free or connate on (rarement), petals 15–20 % of their length. Apex margin entire (entièrement poilus). Stamens at the anthesis longer than corolla to shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary pyramidal or subglobulous or flattened, glabrous (à part quelques rares poils).

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Thyrses axes 0.1–2 cm. Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 2–8 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 2–7 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 2 2.5 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0 tenth of the base. Bracts deltoids, pubescent, 0.5–1 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, deltoids or linear-triangulate, pubescent, 0.3–0.5 mm, margin entire or margin ciliate. Female flowers 4–5 -merous, white. Calyx pubescent (peu de poils), margin entire (irrégulière) or margin ciliate or dentate, 1.5–2.5 mm in diam. Corolla 2–2.5 mm, petals free or connate on, petals 20–25 % of their length. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded) (papilleux) or ciliate. Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary spherical, glabrous, stigma mamillate or capitate, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit red or black, ovoid to spherical, 4–7 mm in diam., 4–7 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, British Guyana Peru Brazil (Amazonie), 100–1200 m, Forêt dense humide sempervirente et Fdh andine sempervirente: "terra firme".

Flowering.— January to March or September to December.

Vernacular name.— "Muesca huayo", "Tupashyra" (Pérou).

Use.— Selon _$Knapp 8519_£, une infusion de feuilles est utilisée pour le traitement des maux de tête et de la grippe.
