Ilex vitis-idaea Loes.

Habit, vegetative morphology.— Shrub. Current year's branchlets pubescent (poils courts). Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, reddish, pubescent, sparse trichomes or dense short trichomes (poils courts). Lenticels on current year's branchlets absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0.2–1 cm. Stipules caducous, linear-triangular, 0.2–0.3 mm. Petiole pubescent, rough or grooved surface, 3–4 mm. Lamina elliptic or obovate, oblong (1:2), 1.5–3 X, 0.9–1.5 cm, coriaceous. Base attenuate. Apex rounded or obtuse, not mucronate. Apex rounded. Margin revolute, crenate, teeth conspicuous. Teeth 6–10 ca., over the entire length of the margin. Midbrid adaxially flat, glabrous. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident, 4–6 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly present.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 2–3 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 3–5 tenth from the base. Peduncles of order 2 1–1.5 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–1 tenth from the base. Bracts linear-triangular, pubescent, 1–2 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangular, glabrous, 0.3–0.5 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4 -merous. Calyx glabrous, 1.5–2 mm in diam., margin ciliate or dentate. Corolla 2–2.5 mm, petals connate on, petals 30–40 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary pyramidal, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Cymes of order 1. Peduncles pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 3–6 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 2–5 tenth of the base. Bracts linear-triangulate, pubescent, 0.5–0.7 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 opposite, linear-triangulate, glabrous, 0.3–0.5 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4 -merous. Calyx glabrous, margin ciliate or dentate, 2–3 mm in diam.

Fruits.— Fruit spherical, 3–4 mm in diam., 3–4 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Brazil (Rio de Janeiro).

Flowering.— November.
