Habit, vegetative morphology.— Tree or shrub, 1–8 m tall. Current year's branchlets glabrous or pubescent. Branchlets older than one year smooth or furrowed, greyish, glabrous. Lenticels on current year's branchlets absent or hardly visible. Internodes 0.1–0.6 cm. Stipules persistent, linear-triangular, 0.5–1 mm. Petiole glabrous or pubescent, rough or grooved surface, 1–5 mm. Lamina elliptic or obovate, oblong (1:2), 1–2.5 X, 0.5–2 cm, coriaceous, glabrous adaxially, glabrous abaxially. Base obtuse or rounded. Apex rounded or obtuse, mucronate. Apex rounded or acuminate. Acumen 0.1 cm. Margin revolute, dentate, teeth inconspicuous or conspicuous. Teeth 0–3 ca., on the distal half of the margin. Midbrid adaxially impressed or flat, glabrous or pubescent on proximal half. Midbrid abaxially raised, glabrous. Secondary veins abaxially evident or obscure, 3–5 pairs. Tertiary veins abaxially obscure. Ponctuation abaxiallly absent.

Inflorescences.— Thyrse, proliferating.

Male flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles glabrous. Peduncles of order 1 4–6 mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 4–6 tenth from the base. Bracts linear-triangular, pubescent (légèrement), 0.5–1 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 subopposite, deltoid, glabrous, 0.3–0.5 mm, margin entire. Male flowers 4–5 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous, 1.5–2 mm in diam., margin entire. Corolla 2–3 mm, petals connate on, petals 15–20 % of their length. Apex margin entire. Stamens at the anthesis shorter than corolla. Rudimentary ovary pyramidal, glabrous.

Female flowers.— Thyrses axes solitary and axillary. Cymes of order 1–2. Peduncles glabrous or pubescent. Peduncles of order 1 2–5(–12) mm. Pherophylls of order 1 at 4–6 tenth of the base. Peduncles of order 2 2.5 mm. Pherophylls of order 2 at 0–2 tenth of the base. Bracts linear-triangulate, pubescent, 1 mm, margin entire. Pherophylls of order 1 subopposite, linear-triangulate, pubescent, 0.3 mm, margin entire. Female flowers 4–5 -merous, white. Calyx glabrous, margin entire, 2–3 mm in diam. Corolla 2–3 mm, petals connate on, petals 10–20 % of their length. Apex margin entire (possibly beaded). Staminodes sagittate, glabrous. Ovary spherical, glabrous, stigma capitate or columnar, stigma glabrous.

Fruits.— Fruit red or black, spherical, 4–5 mm in diam., 4–5 mm.

Distribution, ecology.— South America, Ecuador (Azuay, Loja), 2000–3300 m, Paramo, shrubby vegetation, dry scrub.

Flowering.— May or October.
