Systematics and Taxonomy of Aquifoliaceae

Systematic review and taxonomy of neotropical Aquifoliaceae. The study of the genus Ilex began in 1987 as part of the preparation of a monographic treatment of Aquifoliaceae for Flora Neotropica. The revision of the Peruvian species studied in the framework of the thesis of Pierre-André Loizeau (1994) has proposed an evolutionary theory of Ilex inflorescences (Loizeau & Spichiger 1992). The taxonomy of Colombian species was also conducted by André Schlüssel for his master in 1992. Two treatments at the family were performed, one for Flowering Plants of the Neotropics (Loizeau & Spichiger In 2004, Smith et al. (Eds.)) and the other for The Families and Genera of Vascular Plants (Loizeau et al. (in press) In: Kubitzki (ed.)). Catalogues of Ilex species of Guianas (Loizeau 1992, ed. 2 1997), Ecuador (Loizeau & Barriera 1999) and Venezuela (Loizeau, P.-A. & G Barriera 2008) have been published. For other regions manuscripts are in press, this is the Catálogo de las Plantas Vascular de Bolivia, the Catalogue of the Vascular Plants of Antioquia (Colombia), Catálogo de las Plantas of Colombia and of the Catalogue of the Vascular Plants of India. Moreover, there is an online publication for Plantas do Nordeste-SQA Checklist (Brazil). Participation of P.-A. Loizeau in a symposium in Copenhagen in May 2003 on the theme of patterns of diversity and complexity of species at different scales (Plant diversity and complexity patterns. Local, regional and global dimensions) gave the opportunity to consider the whole distribution of current and past Ilex genus with a view to understanding the particular history of this distribution (Loizeau et al. 2005). Since 2005 our work was mainly devoted to the thorough revision (Nomenclatural and taxonomic) of 204 species of Ilex in China. This work was published in 2008 in volume 11 of the Flora of China (Chen et al. 2008). In addition we participated in the Checklist of the plants of the Guiana Shield (Berry et al. 2007) and Nuevo Catálogo de Flora Vascular de Venezuela (Loizeau and Barriera 2008). Our perspective is getting down to the publication of a checklist of Ilex of Americas for which we have already collected ca. ¾ data. Various phylogenetic studies have been conducted in parallel with our work (Cuénoud et al. 2000, Powell et al. 2000, Manen et al. 2002, Manen et al. submitted). The descriptions of taxa are in DELTA format, to be continuously updated interactive key for identifying the material. Interactive Keys, species descriptions and illustrations are available on the group's website Monographia Aquifoliacearum.

There are approximately 350 species in South America. But the latest nomenclatural treatment has been published in 1901 (Loesener) and included approximately 150 species. It is therefore necessary to review the nomenclature of species since that date. Currently the database contains more than 650 names for this area.
The project will produce a checklist of names with synonyms and taxonomic and nomenclatural lectotypification. Their distribution in South America will also be indicated.

Taxa from all countries of South America have been reviewed, except those of central and northeastern Brazil. That leaves about thirty taxa to analyzed morphologically. This project will identify and describe these taxa for inclusion in the interactive key.
Data entry is done using the package Delta, which serves both as a database and a tool to publish on the Internet descriptions, translations, and interactive keys.
