African Plant Database

Establishment and maintenance of a database on African plants (North, Tropical, and Southern Africa; Madagascar and other Western Indian Ocean Islands) with public web-based access. Nomenclature, synonymy, distribution, ecology.

The four volumes of the "Enumération des plantes à fleurs d’Afrique tropicale" published by A. Stork and J.-P. Lebrun (1991-1996) are a key reference for African floristics. This work can be considered as the second edition, and is supplemented with ecology (habit and habitat) and a distribution map for each species .
As soon as a volume is published, the corresponding data are incoporporated in the African Plant Database and available on the Web.

Botanical information on North Africa has not been synthetized since the flora of Maire in the first half of 20th century. In recent years, regional or national floras have been initiated, but they do not provide a comprehensive taxonomic view across North Africa as a whole.
The checklist of North Africa (28,000 names) by A. Dobignard aims to provide an global synonymic view and to document bibliography as comprehensively as possible, and to highlight the many taxonomic problems to be solved. These data require nomenclatural, taxonomic and geographical standardization and integration of new scientific data.
These data are updated permanently and ar available on the Web through the African Plant Database site. A hardcopy will be published in 5 volumes.
