THE FIRST PHASE (2006-2007)
In December 2005, the Contemporary Art Funds of the City and Canton launched an international contest by invitation for luminous creations to be installed on the roofs of two buildings around the Plaine de Plainpalais. Five artists were invited to take part: Angela Bulloch (GB), Sylvie Fleury (CH), Jérôme Leuba (CH), Matt Mullican (the USA) and Daniel Pflumm (CH).
A jury was set up to judge these projects: Pierre Bismuth, artist (F), Philippe Davet, representative of the association "Quartier des Bains”, Katya Garcia Anton, director of the Center of Contemporary Art Geneva, Laura Györik Costas, member of the FMAC commission and curator, Simon Lamunière, member of the FMAC commission and curator, Francoise Ninghetto, assistant director of the MAMCO, Christoph Schenker, director of the Institut “Medien & Kunst, Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst” (Zurich) and Eric Troncy, art critic (F).
The two winning projects chosen in February 2006 are now completed. «YES TO ALL» by Sylvie Fleury covers the roof of’the building located at the corner of the street Patru and the avenue du Mail, property of the Rentes Genevoises and «BREATH», by Jerome Leuba, the roof of the building No 2 avenue du Mail, property of the Centre universitaire protestant. These two installations were launched on May 15, 2007.
THE WINNING PROJECTS
«YES TO ALL» by SYLVIE FLEURY (Geneva/CH, 1961)
Sylvie Fleury is one of the Geneva artists whose fame, right
now, is internationally recognized.
The use of slogans is a recurring
practice in her work. They are often borrowed, such as ready-made
phrases, to the world of fashion, design, Internet ; the transposition of
their context renews and enriches the interpretation we make
of them. The concept suggested here by the artist, «YES TO ALL», already exists in her work in different versions:
exhibition title, installations made out of crystals on mirrors
or neon, etc.
The work integrates easily with the building by the judicious choice of the typography and the liveliness of the colour; the project is appealing thanks to the optimism and universality transmitted by its message.

«BREATH» by JERÔME LEUBA (Geneva/CH, 1970)
Jérôme Leuba is a Geneva artist who is getting to
be wellknown but whose recognition outside Switzerland remains
to be achieved.
«BREATH» is a 26 meters length single
luminous tube which diffuses a uniform halo of white light (by
definition, the sum of all the colors) and which looks to be
suspended in space. The formal purity of the project refers to
the modernistic structure of the building of which it underlines
the originality, but without artifice.
With «BREATH», the artist plays with the flux of light whose intensity decreases until it becomes almost invisible, then increases again until it reaches again its maximum intensity. again. The light in impulse appears in perpetual movement, like breathing, and thus seems to give life to the building.
