3000-2500 BC
The first inhabitants settled on the banks of the lake.
58 BC Julius Caesar stopped the invasion of Helvetii towards Gaul and destroyed the bridge crossing the Rhône river. The name of Geneva was mentioned for the first time in De Bello Gallico.
443 AD Geneva was the first capital of the Germanic Burgundian Kingdom.
534 Geneva belonged to the Kingdom of the Merovingian and then the Carolingian Empire.
1032 Geneva was linked up with the Roman Germanic Empire. The Emperor delegated his power to the Bishop of Geneva.
1160 Beginning of the Saint Peter’s Cathedral building.
1260 Construction of the market-hall and expansion of the Geneva Fairs.
1387
Grant by Bishop Adhémar Fabri of a Liberty Chart to the Geneva citizens.
1526
Combourgeoisie between Geneva, Bern and Fribourg.
1536 The Reform was adopted by the General Council.
1541 Calvin was called back to Geneva where he settled.
1559 Foundation of the Geneva Academy, forerunner of the present University.
1584 Combourgeoisie between Geneva, Bern and Zurich.
1602 Charles Emmanuel the First, Duke of Savoy, failed in his attempt to storm the town by climbing up its high walls. The Memorial Day of this event called the « Escalade » an essential patriotic celebration of Geneva.
1685 Revocation of the Edit of Nantes which ended the liberty of protestant celebration in churches. New wave of Huguenot refugees in Geneva.
1712 Birth of Jean-Jacques Rousseau in Geneva.
1754-1778 Voltaire lived in Geneva and Ferney.
1798 Geneva was annexed by France and became the chief town of the Léman Department.
1813 Restoration of the Geneva Republic.
1814 Landing of the Swiss people at the Port-Noir.
1815 Geneva became a Swiss canton.
1842 The City of Geneva became an independent commune with a local Council elected by the population.
1847 The Geneva Constitution was adopted after the revolution of 1846 and is still in force today.
1850-1880 Demolition of fortifications allowing the expansion of the City.
1863 The International Red Cross Movement was established.
1879 First performance at the Grand Théâtre (Opera).
1891 Inauguration of the Jet d’Eau (Water Fountain).
1896 National Exhibition in Geneva.
1907 Separation of the Church and the State.
1918 The Orchestra of the Suisse Romande gave its first concert.
1919 Geneva became the Headquarters of the League of Nations.
1920 Construction of the runway of Cointrin Airport.
1924 First international motor show.
1930 Adoption by the Geneva people of the City and communes union.
1946 Geneva became the European Headquarters of the United Nations.
1953 CERN establishes its headquarters in Geneva.
1955 Summit conference between the United States, the Soviet Union, France and Great Britain.
1971 The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) organizes the first TELECOM in Geneva.
1985 Reagan-Gorbatchev Meeting.
1991 Birth of the World Wide Web in CERN.
2003 Inauguration of the Geneva Stadium.
