The Bibliothèque d'Art et d'Archéologie (Library of Art and Archaeology) holds a rich collection of fashion periodicals dating from the beginning of the 19th century to the present time. The most important old titles are on display in this exhibit, including Journal des dames et des modes, La Mode, Petit courrier des dames, Journal des demoiselles and Magasin des demoiselles. Many contain patterns, models and hand-watercoloured fashion engravings. Falbalas & fanfreluches, La Gazette du bon ton and recent copies of Vogue and Visionaire magazines represent the 20th and 21st centuries. All of these highly visual documents, with their text descriptions of manners and customs, comprise a detailed source of information on the history of attire, the clothing industry, art and aesthetics. The more contemporary publications may sometimes contain photos and extravagant objects as well.
