Contemporary artists in Geneva: episode III

The concept of luxe or luxury can be assimilated perhaps to an art form; something that doesn’t need to exist, a product that eludes simple industrial reproduction as well as, according to the economist and sociologist Thorstein Veblen, being “that which distinguishes the superior from the common, and that which, fundamentally, excludes.” What exactly does luxury mean? If the impossibility of its definition was a commonplace at the end of the 18th century, how do currently active artists regard the notion in 2009 in Geneva, a city that maintains a special relationship with the phenomenon? This question is the object of a competition sent out to the Geneva artistic scene. The retained proposals will be exposed in the first Swiss museum to be dedicated to the fine arts.
