This exhibition presents the photographic legacy of Jacques Faublée's first mission in Madagascar between 1938 and 1941. The photographs are a selection from the 12'000 black and white negatives donated to the museum by his daughter in 2008. They have been carefully classified and documented following a detailed inventory by the author himself. Not only is the archival value of the photographs inestimable, they also offer outstanding aesthetic qualities. This is a unique opportunity to view the work of the former curator at the Musée de l'Homme in Paris, Madagascar specialist and linguist who worked alongside France's pioneers in ethnology.
The collection, raises questions about the relationship between anthropology and photography, about the role of our photographic collections in scientific research and about how to make them accessible to the public.
The four sections of the exhibition tell a story in photographs and texts which offers multiple perceptions of reality, an array of perspectives and a variety of ways of seeing and reading. Visitors are invited to contemplate a dizzying mass of images, Jacques Faublée's "box of photographs", and then to explore the inner workings of the selection process according to different themes and criteria.
The richly illustrated catalogue accompanying the exhibition reflects the multiple readings of Jacques Faublée's photographic work put forward by specialists from a range of disciplines who were invited to bring their own points of view to bear on the photographic images.
