Henry and Ruth Rusillon collection

Henry Rusillon (1872-1938), pastor, missionary in Madagascar from 1904 to 1924. With a view to the evangelization of the Sakalava kingdoms, he studied ancestor worship and the tromba ceremony (manifestation of the spirits of the royal ancestors). His work on "pagan religions", based on a thorough knowledge of the field, is close to that of an ethnographer, whereas his ultimate goal is to eradicate ungodly cults and impose Christianity. His testimony of life in Madagascar at the beginning of the 20th century remains capital and also resides in the photographic collection he made with his daughter Ruth (1892-1970), a schoolteacher and director of a boarding school. The updating of the collection began with the digitization of the 65 prints and will continue with the 348 negatives that make it up.
