Family NERITIDAE
( or NERITES )

Main features of the family :

Sturdy, nearly globular shells with few whorls. Herbivorous molluscs.
All nerites are provided with a tight - fitting operculum that enables them to retain water
within the shell and thus withstand long periods of exposure in the intertidal splash zone.
2 species of nerites have a verified occurrence in the Galápagos Islands.
