Family SCISSURELLIDAE

Main features of the family :

Having split the Pleurotomariacea into several superfamilies, HASZPRUNAR (1989)
has removed the Scissurellidae from the Pleurotomariacea sensu stricto and created
the superfamily Scissurellacea or Scissurelloidea. HERBERT (1986) has reviewed
the systematics of the Scissurellidae, discussing the shell and protoconch characters
of the recognized genera. McLEAN (1989) further recognized four subfamilies,
the genus Anatoma Woodward, 1859 being now placed in the Anatominae,
and the genera Scissurella d'Orbigny, 1824 and Sinezona Finlay, 1927 being placed
together with Incisura Hedley, 1904 in the Scissurellinae.

Two species of Scissurellids have been recorded from the Galápagos Islands
(FINET, 1994).
