Family  TROCHIDAE
( or  TOP  SHELLS )

Main  features  of  the  family : 

The  shells  of  this  large  family  ( several  hundred  species  world - wide )  are  conical  
with  several  whorls  and  a  round  aperture.  Most  top  shells  are  herbivores. 
High - spired  species  tend  to  live  in  calm  water.  Low - spired  species  are  often  
found  where  wave  action  is  strong. 
12 species of top shells have been recorded from the Galápagos Islands.
