African flowering plants database

The database currently comprises 164'492 names of flowering plants with their nomenclatural statuts. Data capture, edition and broadcast are the product of a collaboration between the South African National Biodiversity Institute, the Conservatoire et Jardin botaniques de la Ville de Genève and Tela Botanica.

Data are based on:
  • Tropical Africa: J.-P. LEBRUN & A. L. STORK (1991-1997). Enumération des plantes à fleurs d'Afrique tropicale. Conservatoire et Jardin botaniques de la Ville de Genève.
  • Southern Africa: G. GERMISUIZEN & N.L. MEYER, eds, (2003). Plants of Southern Africa: an annotated checklist Pretoria.
  • North Africa: DOBIGNARD, A.(in prep.) Synonymic and bibliographic index of the flora of North Africa.
Data are updated on a regular basis, following the literature. Any missing information or corrections are most welcome. In the next steps, plants of Madagascar will be integreted with a collaboration of the Missouri botanical Garden.  Names and synonymy are used as nomenclatural backbone for the "African  Plants Initiative" (Aluka, Andrew W, Mellon Foundation); and used by biosystematics  Wageningen University group, herbarium database, and Global Compositae Checklist database; by Zurich University in several botanical projects.

Query is performed on the complete name, including authors, but can be done on family Information on data, standards, processes, maps
